Try It!: Kids Karaoke at the Singin' Bean

Locations:

195B N. Perry St.
Lawrenceville; 770-339-7464

Kids Karaoke Hours:
Fri., 6-8 p.m.

Regular Hours:
Fri., 6-8 p.m..

I tookmy8-year-old, Savannah,and6-year-old, Sierra, to the Singin’ Bean in Lawrenceville – a coffee shop that hosts weekly karaoke nights for children – to see what Friday’s Kids Karaoke was all about.

Our first impressions: The Singin’ Bean was easy to .find, and there was plenty of on-street parking. It’s a cute little place, located on the second floor of a storefront. The front of the store is a coffee shop, and the backnight we visited, and there was no room for additional guests. I would definitely recommend arriving right at 6 p.m., when the event begins, to get a table.

Savannah, Sierra and I looked through a couple of binders to choose songs, and they were disappointed at the lack of “kid” songs from which to choose (they were looking for Hannah Montana, of course). Another mom later informed me that the Singin’ Bean had 1,000 more songs that were not listed in the binders, so be sure to ask if you don’t see what you’re looking for.
Savannah took the stage first and sang Sk8ter Boi by Avril Lavigne; she loved going up there and holding the microphone. My girls performed twice and said they really enjoyed themselves and want to go back. They hammed up their performances, even dropping to the floor at the end of their song. And Savannah went so far as to dedicate Reflections from Mulan to me!
The ages of the kids that night ranged from approximately 6 to 13, and the majority of them were girls. I was surprised that they all seemed eager to perform – no one appeared to have stage fright, including my daughters!

Each kid got to perform two to three times.
The Singin’ Bean’s menu was basic, but enough to satisfy. They offered salads, quesadillas and sandwiches, and the kids’ menu included grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, and chicken fingers.

Each kid meal is served with chips and soda for $3.99. Both of my girls were happy with their peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I ate a chicken quesadilla, which was good.We all ate brownies for dessert, but I did see a couple of other choices, including chocolate cake and cookies.

Overall, I would definitely take my girls back to the Singin’Bean. I only wish the space were a little bigger so there would be more “wiggle room.” It would also be nice if the event ended at 9 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. so the kids had a bit more time. The shop does offer family karaoke on other nights, which I would like to attend so I can perform with the girls. I think we would all enjoy that!
