Try It!: Kids Karaoke at the Singin' Bean
Locations:
195B N. Perry St.
Lawrenceville; 770-339-7464
Kids Karaoke Hours:
Fri., 6-8 p.m.
Regular Hours:
Fri., 6-8 p.m..
I tookmy8-year-old, Savannah,and6-year-old, Sierra, to the Singin’ Bean in Lawrenceville – a coffee shop that hosts weekly karaoke nights for children – to see what Friday’s Kids Karaoke was all about.
Our first impressions: The Singin’ Bean was easy to .find, and there was plenty of on-street parking. It’s a cute little place, located on the second floor of a storefront. The front of the store is a coffee shop, and the backnight we visited, and there was no room for additional guests. I would definitely recommend arriving right at 6 p.m., when the event begins, to get a table.
Savannah, Sierra and I looked through a couple of binders to choose songs, and they were disappointed at the lack of “kid” songs from which to choose (they were looking for Hannah Montana, of course). Another mom later informed me that the Singin’ Bean had 1,000 more songs that were not listed in the binders, so be sure to ask if you don’t see what you’re looking for.Savannah took the stage first and sang Sk8ter Boi by Avril Lavigne; she loved going up there and holding the microphone. My girls performed twice and said they really enjoyed themselves and want to go back. They hammed up their performances, even dropping to the floor at the end of their song. And Savannah went so far as to dedicate Reflections from Mulan to me!
The ages of the kids that night ranged from approximately 6 to 13, and the majority of them were girls. I was surprised that they all seemed eager to perform – no one appeared to have stage fright, including my daughters!
Each kid got to perform two to three times.
The Singin’ Bean’s menu was basic, but enough to satisfy. They offered salads, quesadillas and sandwiches, and the kids’ menu included grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, and chicken fingers.
Each kid meal is served with chips and soda for $3.99. Both of my girls were happy with their peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I ate a chicken quesadilla, which was good.We all ate brownies for dessert, but I did see a couple of other choices, including chocolate cake and cookies.
Overall, I would definitely take my girls back to the Singin’Bean. I only wish the space were a little bigger so there would be more “wiggle room.” It would also be nice if the event ended at 9 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. so the kids had a bit more time. The shop does offer family karaoke on other nights, which I would like to attend so I can perform with the girls. I think we would all enjoy that!

Give a Day, Get a Disney Day Free
Give a Day, Get a Disney Day Free
As I’d love to make it down to Orlando next year, I’m going to try & take advantage of this deal:
Disney is partnering with the HandsOn Network for the Give a Day, Get a Disney Day Free promotion. The premise is simple: If you give your time & volunteer for a day, you’ll get voucher for a free day at Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks.
As always, the deal has stipulations. Here are the highlights:
- You’ll need to search online for a volunteer opportunity & sign up to participate. The catch is that you can’t start looking for those opportunities until January 1, 2010.
- Once they verify your service, you’ll receive the voucher for free admission.
- The program ends on December 15, 2010, or once all of the tickets are distributed, whichever comes first. I believe their goal is to inspire a million people to give, so sign up on the early end of things if you’re planning to participate.
- There’s a limit of one ticket per person, regardless of the number of hours donated. But the program is open to anyone age 6 or older, so if you get the family involved, you can get most of them in for free. The vouchers are not transferrable though, and you will need to produce a photo ID or a copy of the birth certificate at the gate.
- The eligible volunteer opportunities are located in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada.
- If you’re buying a multi-day pass or an annual pass, you have options: Instead of the voucher, you can get a free FASTPASS for you & up to 5 other members of your party or a collectible ear hat figurine with trading pins. Or you can donate your voucher to a non-profit organization designated by Disney.
Think you’ll forget to register? Click here to receive an email update reminder from Disney.

Have you stalled on seeing the America I AM exhibition at the Atlanta Civic Center? Best head out soon before it’s gone. Atlanta is the second stop on the America I AM: The African-American Imprint exhibition’s four-year tour across the country. America I AM brings together artifacts, documents, music, photos, and more to highlight the, history, contributions and cultural influences of African Americans in the U.S. over the past 500 years.
You’ll see the “Doors of No Return,” which enslaved Africans passed through in Ghana to board ships to the “New World;” Malcom X’s journal and personal Koran; the robe Muhammad Ali wore during training for “Rumble in the Jungle,” the typewriter Alex Haley used to write “Roots,” and more.

Six Flags Over Georgia: Military Appreciation Donation Drive (5 Donations = $100 in Coupons) + Free Admission on Military Appreciation Days
Six Flags Over Georgia: Military Appreciation Donation Drive (5 Donations = $100 in Coupons) + Free Admission on Military Appreciation Days
Two great ways to support the troops at Six Flags Over Georgia during September:
1) During the Military Appreciation Donation Drive (September 19, 20, 26, & 27), if you donate five items for care packages sent to servicemen & women overseas, you’ll receive a coupon book with $100 worth of in-park savings. Stick to the official donation list—soldiers can’t store bulky items, so you’re buying things like flavored drink mixes in the packet, not large containers, or crackers in single-serving packages.
2) As a thank you to active members of the U.S. military, Six Flags Over Georgia is offering the men & women free admission. You’ll need to bring your military I.D. to get the deal, and it’s good for reservists, too. Bonus #1: The free admission includes the member of the military & up to two dependents. Bonus #2: If you need more tickets, you can buy them for half off at the gate.
The only catch is that you’ll need to show up on your designated day to take advantage of the free entry:
- September 19: Air Force
- September 20: Navy & Coast Guard
- September 26: Army
- September 27: Marines

Music Icon BB King hits the stage in mableton 9.2.2009
BB King
His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King continues to wear his crown well. At age 83, he is still light on his feet, singing and playing the blues with relentless passion. Time has no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. Don't look for him in some kind of semi-retirement; look for him out on the road, playing for people, popping up in a myriad of T.V. commercials, or laying down tracks for his next album. B.B. King is as alive as the music he plays, and a grateful world can't get enough of him.
B.B. continues to tour extensively, averaging over 250 concerts per year around the world. Classics such as "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss," "The Thrill Is Gone," How Blue Can You Get," "Everyday I Have The Blues," and "Why I Sing The Blues" are concert (and fan) staples.Saturday, August 29, 2009

Top 5 places to live in Atlanta without a car
In New York it is easy to get around without a car, in Atlanta it is trickier -- not only because of limited routes, but also because there are few neighborhoods that provide the amenities needed to live car-free, namely grocery stores and convenience to MARTA. So keeping these things in mind along with safety considerations, here is my list of places I would recommend to live in Atlanta if you don't have a car:
5. Atantic Station
While somewhat on its own island across from midtown, Atlantic Station does offer a highly convenient shuttle to the Arts Center train station. Housing isn't as affordable as other areas, especially living alone. Grocery shopping is found at Publix and residents can choosing from all the shops in the retail district along with Target and Ikea. Some nightlife and restaurants can also be found. This area is good for students at Tech and Georgia State because of the proximity.
4. Downtown Decatur
Downtown Decatur is charming and cute and highly walkable and safe. The square has restaurants and nightlife. The only major downside is that there is only one small Kroger that services the area. Otherwise, it feels like a small town and there are some affordable apartments and several condo buildings to choose from. Bus 2 runs down Ponce and can take you into the city in addition to the Decatur train station.
3. Little 5 Points/Inman Park
A hipper neighborhood, Little 5 Points offers shopping, theaters, music venues, as well as a restaurant district that also offers Sevenanda, a health foods store. Slightly up the street is the Publix on Ponce and bus 6 that runs through the area goes to Emory. A little farther down from Little 5 and more residential is the historic Inman Park neighborhood where you'll find lots of parks, more restaurants/retail and the Inman Park train station, which is about a 15 minute walk from the heart of Little 5. Depending on where you live, a walk to Target and Kroger in the Edgewood Retail District is also an option. Having a bike here makes a big difference, and you'll see many bike riders on the street.
2. Midtown
Midtown is one of the most walkable MARTA areas in the city. There are affordable apartments in the residential area south of Piedmont Park with a Trader Joe's on one end and Publix at the other. Or, for those who can afford it, there are many condos as well. Plenty of nightlife and restaurants are steps away, along with three MARTA stations and Piedmont Park. This neighborhood did not make the number one spot due to increased general crime in the area, and while a great walkable area, always use caution at night, especially south of 7th Street and along Juniper and Piedmont.
1. Virginia Highlands
Virginia Highlands is a safer area in the city, has great restaurants and nightlife, and depending on what part of the neighborhood you live, choose from Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Publix for groceries. Piedmont Park is still nearby and while not as convenient to the train, the neighborhood has four major bus routes that go through the area, 6, 16, 45 and 2. These routes provide convenient access to both the east/west and north/south rail lines, downtown, Emory, Little 5 Points, Midtown, Candler Park and Inman Park.

Welcome to Connection of Faith !
I am please to announce that Connection of faith is now serving the Cobb County and surrounding areas. We are just looking for people like you who are willing and ready to be a connection of faith! For example, being a connection means that you may be called upon from time to time to give a pound of ground beef to a hungry family or it may just be a gallon of milk. It could also mean giving some of your gently used clothes to a needy family. Of course you may not always be in position to help someone but there's a good chance you’re connected to someone who can, and that is why were called Connection Of Faith. Please visit our web site that is a work in progress. You can leave suggestions and comments. Let me know if you’re interested in being a connection. Our Purpose: To help community citizens with food, clothing and transitional services. Its blessed to be a blessing! Email us at COFMarietta@gmail.com
